Tegan Introduces Herself

I’m Tegan :)

I am Australian. See epic poem stanza I did not write below.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains,
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me.

I’m fifteen, in high school, and am starting to classify myself as a writer foremost, and a human second.

When I am older (but not too old, thanks) I’d like to be an English teacher or a literary agent, and an author in the little spare time I will have. I always look for a deeper meaning or more complicated answer when there is none, which causes me great anxiety in maths and science tests. I love Romeo and Juliet but think Shakespeare would’ve been slammed by us writing wannabes for unrealistic characters and undeveloped romance.

I’m a pantser who’s starting to see the light the plotters bask in and has the attention span the size of an atom. I’m in the ACE class at school, and have been in accelerated classes since I was ten. In Grade One I did Grade Three work and ended up skipping Grade Two all together. I hate it when people act like I’m an idiot, an immature teenage girl who loves Justin Bieber. No, no, andno.

John Marsden, Jackie French and Kirsty Murray are all geniuses of the first degree. I know all the lyrics to Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice and Nosebleed Section by the Hilltop Hoods. I play violin and clarinet and have known how to read music since I was eight. There is no music I can’t appreciate.I’ve been learning Italian for the past six or so years and have done two years of Japanese and one year of French.

I find American accents the most amusing things in the world. I had a two-year long obsession with Canada when I was thirteen and spent lunchtime running around the oval singing their national anthem.

I’ve travelled everyone in Australia except the ACT and Tasmania. But that’s okay, because it’s the ACT and Tasmania. I’ve lived in Darwin (NT), Bendigo (VIC), Mount Isa (QLD), Perth (WA) and Melbourne (VIC). I’m in my eighth house now. I’ve been in Melbourne, in the same house, for the past four years and am getting antsy because of the lack of scenery change.

Writing wise, I cannot write general fiction. My first two projects were, and one of them had a shark attack and the second an eleven month “coma”. It’s PVS, really. It was quickly obvious I couldn’t write about someone having a normal-ish life. Or a book that’s all romance. Point? Fantasy and dystopia are my things now. It’s been decided.I’ll read anything and everything. Except if it’s crap. Then I’ll burn it >:)

Anyway, I hope this post about me–selfish, post-hogging me–has made me sound a lot more interesting than I am.
